UK Government to Ban Daytime TV Ads for Sugary Foods in Effort to Combat Child Obesity

CGC News Reporter December 5, 2024

The UK government is taking decisive action to address the rising rates of child obesity, with new measures banning daytime TV adverts for sugary foods such as granola and muffins.

Under the new regulations, which will take effect from October next year, ads for “less healthy” food and drinks will only be permitted after the 9:00 pm watershed. This move comes as the National Health Service reports that one in 10 four-year-olds in the UK is now classified as obese, and one in five five-year-olds suffers from tooth decay due to excessive sugar consumption.

The government has labeled these popular snacks as junk food, aiming to reduce their impact on children’s health.
