Government Cracks Down on Tax Defaulters to Boost VAT Revenue Collection

In an effort to streamline non-filers of Value Added Tax (VAT) and taxpayers with arrears, the government has intensified measures to prevent tax defaulters from engaging in export/import businesses. With revenue collection falling short, the tax authorities have united to take strict action against evaders. Despite the targeted annual revenue of Rs 1.284 trillion, only 22.58 percent of the goal has been achieved in the first four months of the current fiscal year. These aggressive steps come as the government faces mounting pressure to boost tax revenues and curb evasion.
