Government Faces Shortfall in Revenue Collection, Struggles to Meet Development Project Expenses
The government is facing challenges in balancing its finances as it struggles to meet revenue collection targets amid ongoing development project expenses. Records from the Financial Comptroller General Office (FCGO) reveal that, between mid-July and mid-December this year, the government collected Rs 399.59 billion in revenue, which is only 28.15 percent of its annual target of Rs 1.419 trillion. With a monthly revenue target of Rs 118.25 billion, the government has fallen short by approximately Rs 200 billion in the first five months of the current fiscal year. This shortfall could create significant financial pressure in the months ahead as the government will need to find ways to recover the deficit in order to meet its annual revenue target. While the government has marginally improved its revenue collection efforts, it remains to be seen how it will manage the gap and ensure sufficient funding for its development projects moving forward.
