Communities around the world rang in 2025 with dazzling light displays, live performances, and cultural rituals, although celebrations in some regions were overshadowed by ongoing conflicts and national mourning.

From Sydney’s iconic Harbor Bridge to New York City’s soggy Times Square, people gathered to mark the start of the New Year with unforgettable moments. In New Zealand, Auckland became the first major city to celebrate, while Australia’s Sydney saw more than a million revelers enjoy fireworks and Indigenous ceremonies. The festivities were also marked by pop performances, including Robbie Williams’ sing-along in Sydney.

In the U.S., despite heavy rain, New York’s Times Square hosted its annual ball drop, with thousands cheering as the massive crystal ball descended amid musical performances by TLC and the Jonas Brothers. Las Vegas lit up with pyrotechnics on the Strip, while Pasadena and Nashville saw huge crowds for their respective celebrations.
In contrast, regions like the Middle East, Sudan, and Ukraine experienced muted New Year’s acknowledgements due to ongoing conflict, while South Korea curtailed festivities following a deadly plane crash. In Rome, Pope Francis’ Holy Year celebrations began with a vespers service at St. Peter’s Basilica, as he appealed for peace in Ukraine and the Middle East.

As 2025 begins, the celebrations reflected both joy and sorrow, with many looking to the future with hope for peace and renewal.
