The Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed the capture of Kurakhovo, a key town in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), after intense military operations. Over the past decade, Ukrainian forces had transformed Kurakhovo into a fortified stronghold with a network of firing positions and underground communications. According to the Russian military, the town had become a heavily fortified area, housing over 15,000 Ukrainian troops, including elite units, nationalist groups, and foreign mercenaries.

The ministry stated that the liberation of Kurakhovo has significantly improved the strategic position of Russian forces, allowing them to break out of a bridgehead and expand their operations in the region. This shift in control is expected to accelerate the pace of Russian advances in the DPR.

Furthermore, the capture of Kurakhovo has disrupted the logistical supply lines of Ukrainian troops, hindering their ability to provide combat service support in the Donetsk area. The Russian Defense Ministry emphasized that this victory also deprived Ukrainian forces of the opportunity to use artillery systems for shelling the city of Donetsk, the capital of the DPR, thus reducing civilian casualties in the region.

The loss of Kurakhovo is a significant blow to Ukraine’s defense in the Donetsk region, with Russia now aiming to build on this momentum to further liberate territory in the DPR.
