UAE Could Host Potential Meeting between Putin and Trump, Russian Expert Suggests
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is emerging as a potential venue for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump, according to Oleg Karpovich, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry. Speaking to TASS, Karpovich highlighted the UAE’s strong history of facilitating international talks, making it a viable option for high-stakes negotiations between the two leaders. Karpovich noted that Trump, during his election campaign, had expressed a desire to resolve the ongoing Ukraine crisis, and that the time has come to move forward and fulfill those promises. He also acknowledged the growing tension in Russian-US relations under outgoing President Joe Biden, describing the situation as far more severe than the historic Caribbean crisis. The expert dismissed Switzerland as a possible meeting location, citing its involvement in anti-Russian sanctions and loss of its neutral status. Instead, he emphasized the UAE’s positive track record of hosting diplomatic exchanges and its potential as a neutral ground for critical discussions.
Putin had previously stated that he would be open to talks with Trump, particularly regarding the Ukraine situation, provided that the discussions are based on the current reality on the ground, where Russian forces continue to advance.
