Disasters Claim 679 Lives and Cause over Rs 48 Billion Loss in Nepal in First Nine Months of 2081 BS

At least 679 people have lost their lives due to various disasters in Nepal during the first nine months of the Nepali year 2081 BS, according to the latest data from the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The period from Baisakh to Poush (mid-April to mid-January) saw around 6,424 disaster incidents across the country, including floods, landslides, heavy rains, fires, lightning, avalanches, and animal attacks.

The NEOC report reveals that, in addition to the fatalities, 66 individuals went missing, and 1,323 others were injured in these catastrophic events. A total of 16,456 families were affected by the disasters, with 7,340 houses partially damaged and 3,536 houses completely destroyed.

In terms of infrastructure, the disasters caused extensive damage, with 71 bridges and 1,083 sheds affected. Furthermore, the devastating events resulted in the death of 7,722 animals, compounding the impact on livelihoods.

The total financial loss from these disasters has exceeded Rs 48.99 billion, further highlighting the significant economic burden faced by affected communities.
