Nepal’s men’s and women’s Kho Kho teams both finished as runners-up in the first-ever Kho Kho World Cup, held in New Delhi, India, on Sunday night. Despite their losses to the host nation in the finals, both Nepali teams earned significant recognition by securing second place in the prestigious tournament, which saw participation from 20 men’s and 19 women’s national teams.

The Nepali women’s team, who had lost their opening game to India earlier in the tournament, faced India again in the final. The Indian women’s team triumphed with a dominant score of 78-40. India led early, securing a 34-0 lead in the first turn, and although Nepal fought back in the second turn, they trailed by 24 points by halftime. Despite a strong defensive effort in the final turn, Nepal couldn’t close the gap, losing by a 38-point margin. This marks the second time Nepal’s women have lost to India in a final, after their defeat in the 13th South Asian Games.

Meanwhile, Nepal’s men’s team faced a similar fate, losing to India 54-36 in a closely contested final. India led 26-0 in the first turn and extended their advantage to 54-18 by Turn 3. Nepal managed to reduce the gap during the final turn, but India’s solid defense ensured a comfortable victory by 18 points.

Both teams’ performances were met with praise, especially considering the tough competition from global teams. The tournament marked a proud moment for Nepal, as their Kho Kho teams showcased their talents on the world stage. Despite the setbacks, the Nepali teams’ remarkable run to the finals raised the profile of the sport in the country, with hopes for further investment and future success, especially if Kho Kho is included in the 2032 Olympics.
