Martyrs’ Day is being observed across Nepal today, with various programs held in memory of those who gave their lives for the establishment and restoration of democracy and freedom throughout the country’s history. The observance takes place every year on Magh 16, a date that has been marked since 2007 BS.

The day serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifices made by the martyrs, but concerns have been raised over the lack of concrete efforts to fulfill the aspirations they fought for. While formal events continue to include speeches and commitments from authorities to honor the martyrs’ dreams, some feel that their vision for the country has not yet been fully realized.

In addition to the main observance on Magh 16, Martyrs’ Week is celebrated from Magh 10 to 16, with various activities and discussions throughout the week. Since 2012 BS, the Kathmandu Municipality has taken responsibility for organizing the commemoration of Martyrs’ Day, bringing together people to reflect on the sacrifices made for the nation’s democracy and freedom.

As the nation honors the martyrs, there is a collective call for the government and society to ensure that their contributions are acknowledged through real progress in achieving the ideals they fought for.
