Trump Plans to Use Guantanamo Bay for Detaining Undocumented Immigrants

President Donald Trump has announced plans to turn the Guantanamo Bay detention center into a facility for holding undocumented immigrants. This comes after Trump signed the Laken Riley Act, which aims to deport millions of undocumented people in the U.S. The law requires the Department of Homeland Security to detain non-citizens who are arrested or charged with certain crimes like theft, even if they haven’t been convicted.

During a speech at the White House, Trump also revealed that the Guantanamo Bay facility would be used to house up to 30,000 immigrants as part of his “mass deportation” plan. He instructed the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to start preparing for the facility’s new role. Many of the immigrants affected by the plan have lived in the U.S. for years, contributing to their communities.
