North Korea Criticizes U.S. Comments and Doubts Trump Diplomacy Restart
North Korea has criticized U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling his comments about North Korea being a “rogue” state “coarse and nonsensical.” This marks North Korea’s first direct criticism of the Trump administration. The statement also signals that North Korea is not interested in restarting talks with the U.S. anytime soon. Despite this, U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at trying to resume diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, suggesting he would reach out again. Trump and Kim met three times during Trump’s first term, but their talks over North Korea’s nuclear program eventually broke down. North Korea has continued its weapons tests and aggressive language towards the U.S., with Kim saying he will pursue the “toughest” anti-U.S. policies. However, Kim is currently focused on supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine, sending thousands of troops and weapons. Experts say Kim might reconsider his stance on the U.S. if his alliance with Russia weakens after the war.
