Trump Delays Mexico Tariffs for a Month, Negotiations with Canada Continue
President Donald Trump has decided to delay tariffs on Mexico for one month after a series of last-minute talks on Monday. Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to pause the tariffs after Sheinbaum promised to send 10,000 troops to the US-Mexico border to help with security. Trump announced the delay on his Truth Social network, saying they would continue talks during the one-month pause to try and reach a deal. Sheinbaum also confirmed the tariff pause and said she had a “good conversation” with Trump. However, Trump did not mention an agreement to increase measures to stop the flow of weapons into Mexico, a point raised by Sheinbaum. The decision came just hours before the 25% tariffs Trump had planned to impose on imports from Mexico and Canada, as well as an extra 10% tariff on Chinese goods, were set to take effect. Trump also spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but the White House stated that talks with Canada were not progressing as smoothly as with Mexico.
