The administration of President Donald Trump has ordered nearly all direct-hire staff at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to take leave as part of efforts to shrink the government.

USAID announced on Tuesday that most employees will be put on leave starting Friday, except for those handling essential tasks, leadership roles, or special programs. USAID staff working overseas will be recalled within 30 days. The agency said it would consider exceptions for employees facing personal or family issues, safety concerns, or other reasons.
