Google Renames Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” on US Maps

Following an executive order by President Donald Trump, Google has renamed the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America” for users in the US. What this means is that while users in the US will be seeing “Gulf of America,” people in Mexico will be seeing the old name. Users outside these countries would see both.

The change is part of Google’s policy to follow the US government geographic names. Trump’s decision to rename the Gulf, along with the renaming of Denali back to Mt. McKinley, has already created an uproar, especially from indigenous groups in Alaska, and went a step further to complicate relations with Mexico.
