At least 15 were dead and more than 10 were injured in a stampede during a New Delhi railway station on Saturday evening. The tragedy was caused as large crowds were dashing to get onto trains for Prayagraj to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious congregation.

The stampede occurred between 8 p.m. on two platforms. The victims were later admitted at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital, where most of the deaths were certified to have been caused by hypoxia, or lack of oxygen. The cause of the stampede has not yet been ascertained by the authorities.

Indian politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, condoled the event and extended their help to the victims.
