Afghan Man Deliberately Drives Vehicle into Crowd in Munich, Injuring 39 People
A 24-year-old Afghan man, Farhad N., deliberately drove his vehicle into a crowd of people who were taking part in a demonstration in Munich on Thursday, injuring 39 people. Two people, one of whom is a child, are in critical condition, and several others are seriously hurt. The authorities believe that the attack may have been motivated by Islamist extremism. Farhad N., who relocated to Germany in 2016, confessed deliberately driving the car into the crowd. He is said to have been a deeply religious individual who had online articles with references to religion. He was, however, no evidence of membership in any group that would have had terrorist connections, like ISIS. German leaders, including President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, visited the location to honor the victims and condemned the attack. The suspect is in custody and being charged. The attack comes as Germany is still debating immigration and security, following a series of similar attacks. The government is considering tighter asylum laws and faster deportations.
