Macron, Trump Talk about Europe’s Role in Bringing Peace to Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump to the White House on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Macron stated that Europe aims to help achieve lasting peace in Ukraine with a focus on stability and firm guarantees. Macron further stated that Europe is prepared to be more engaged in defense, security, trade, and investment. Trump and Macron both believe in the principle of peace but differ regarding the approach. Macron believes that there must be a security pact among peace terms, and this can involve European peacekeepers. Trump suggests that Europe should be responsible for securing the future of Ukraine. The summit comes against the background of increasing tensions regarding the future of U.S.-Europe relations, especially as Trump calls for quicker negotiations and attacks President Zelenskyy of Ukraine. European leaders are concerned that a quick peace deal may undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty. Nevertheless, Macron’s effort to coordinate with Trump suggests that Europe is committed to being at the heart of Ukraine’s long-term security.
