A Sudanese military transport plane crashed into a residential suburb just outside Khartoum, killing 46. The Antonov plane crashed on Tuesday evening near the Wadi Seidna air base, a strategic military base in Omdurman, northwest of the capital.

The crash occurred during takeoff time and resulted in the death or injuries of soldiers and civilians. 46 people were reported dead and 10 injured by the Khartoum regional government. The crash also destroyed a number of houses in the area, with eye witnesses having seen a huge explosion. The neighboring villages had power outages reported, and rescue teams took injured civilians and children to hospital.

A military commander had stated the crash was a technical failure, but the official reason has yet to be ascertained. This came barely a day after paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took responsibility for shooting down a Russian-made aircraft in South Darfur.

The war between Sudan’s armed forces and the RSF that began in April 2023 has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. The war has displaced over 12 million people, destroyed towns, and left the country struggling with famine and infrastructure collapse.
