Trump, Ukraine Sign $1 Trillion Deal, but No Security Guarantee Yet

US President Donald Trump recently released a draft deal with Ukraine, valued as high as $1 trillion. The pact revolves around strategic minerals, in a bid to deepen economic relationships between the two countries. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the pact includes no security guarantees for Ukraine, which remains the number one priority for Kyiv.

Zelenskyy had already rejected an early draft of the agreement since it lacked security guarantees. The new framework accord, described as an economic partnership, is seen as an attempt to secure US support for Ukraine amid ongoing tensions in the conflict in Ukraine. Although the price of the proposed accord is steep, there are concerns in Ukraine and Europe that Trump will impose a peace agreement with Russia, perhaps on Russian terms.

Trump did say that Zelenskyy could possibly come to Washington to sign the agreement, but Zelenskyy has explicitly stated that Ukraine’s entry into NATO is still a top priority for the security of the nation, something the US has deemed unrealistic. The nature of the agreement, such as what was agreed on in terms of the extraction of minerals, is unclear.
