During his first cabinet meeting of his second term in office, United States President Donald Trump claimed that the European Union (EU) was formed to harm the United States. “The European Union was formed to screw the United States,” Trump stated, continuing to claim that the EU had been successful in doing this. He went on to warn that he would release details shortly on a new tariff threat, which he said would involve a 25% tax on European goods.

The European Commission acted swiftly, though, and insisted that the EU is the world’s largest free market and has benefited the U.S. They vowed to retaliate strongly and quickly against any new tariffs. The U.S. administration in recent weeks has promised to levy higher import duties on European products, raising tensions between the two blocs.
