Hamas Responds to Trump Threats, Saying They Could Put Ceasefire in Jeopardy

Hamas responded to the most recent threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump, saying they could lead Israel to ignore the tenuous Gaza ceasefire. Trump made threats that the people of Gaza would be severely damaged unless hostages were released, saying it was “over” for Hamas if demands were not met.

His comments followed the U.S.’s historic direct talks with Hamas, to which Israel was invited. Trump also said that his government was providing Israel with more weapons to allow them to “finish the job.”

Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasim said that Trump’s threats made the ceasefire process tougher and urged the U.S. to pressure Israel to be bound by the ceasefire terms. Israel wants to extend the first phase of the ceasefire until April, while Hamas is demanding a move towards the second phase that will lead to lasting peace.

Trump also enraged individuals by suggesting that America should occupy Gaza and resettle its Palestinian population to Egypt or Jordan. His idea was denounced by the global community, with political leaders calling for unlimited humanitarian aid for Gaza.
