Trump Threatens Reciprocal Tariffs on Canada in Dairy and Timber Disputes

CGC News Reporter March 9, 2025

President Donald Trump stated that America would put tariffs on Canada on dairy goods and lumber as early as Friday. Trump had accused Canada of levying excessive tariffs—over 200%—on American dairy and timber imports and said it makes it nearly impossible to sell American products in Canada.

Trump said the U.S. would retaliate by levying the same tariffs on Canada if Canada reduces its tariffs. Trump added that his administration would also ease environmental regulations to increase domestic lumber supply.

This trade war is only part of a larger tit-for-tat between the U.S. and Canada. Previous to this, imports from Canada and Mexico were hit with tariffs, which resulted in Canada introducing retaliatory tariffs. Trump further threatened that he would impose like tariffs on other countries levying duties on U.S. goods starting April 2.
