Jordanian Foreign Minister Expresses Support for Syria’s Reconstruction during Historic Visit
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has expressed strong support for Syria’s reconstruction efforts following a historic visit to Damascus on Monday. This marks the first trip by a senior Jordanian official to Syria since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad. During the meeting with Syria’s newly appointed leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, Safadi discussed potential avenues for cooperation, including trade, border management, aid, electricity connections, and security. Jordan, which shares a border with Syria, is keen on ensuring the stability and security of the region, with both nations working toward closer ties. The meeting came shortly after a summit hosted by Jordan where diplomats from various regions called for an inclusive and peaceful transition in Syria after years of civil war. Jordan’s commitment to the Syrian people was further highlighted by government spokesman Mohamed Momani, who reiterated the kingdom’s position in favor of Syria’s territorial unity and security. Amid ongoing challenges, Jordan has also seen a gradual return of Syrian refugees, with over 7,000 returning home recently. Safadi also reiterated Jordan’s dedication to providing support for Syrian refugees, ensuring their voluntary return to Syria as part of the broader recovery efforts.
Safadi reaffirmed Jordan’s backing for a government that represents all Syrian citizens, as well as support for drafting a new Syrian constitution. He emphasized that Arab countries are united in supporting Syria’s rebuilding process without any external interference.
