China’s 5G Mobile Subscriptions Reach 1.002 Billion, Solidifying Global Leadership
China’s 5G mobile phone subscriptions reached a landmark 1.002 billion by the end of November, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). This milestone represents 56% of all mobile subscriptions in the country, marking a 9.4 percentage point increase from the previous year. The rapid growth is fueled by massive infrastructure investments, with over 4.2 million 5G base stations deployed nationwide. China’s 5G dominance is further demonstrated by its accounting for more than 60% of the world’s total 5G base stations. The country’s extensive 5G coverage spans major cities, government centers, cultural sites, and transportation hubs, with efforts underway to expand service to rural and remote areas. In addition to infrastructure, the 5G ecosystem has had a profound economic impact, creating 8 million jobs in 2023 and contributing an estimated 5.6 trillion yuan (approximately $767 billion USD) to the economy. Looking ahead, the MIIT’s ambitious “Set Sail” plan aims to increase the country’s 5G base stations and user penetration, with targets set for 2027. As cities around the world accelerate their 5G adoption, Shanghai has unveiled an ambitious plan to integrate 5G Advanced (5G-A) technology with AI and other cutting-edge innovations by 2026, underlining China’s leadership in the global 5G race. Globally, 5G subscriptions are expected to surpass 2.3 billion by the end of 2024, signaling a rapid shift toward 5G networks worldwide.
