Two people have died after a fire broke out in a residential area near Tokyo Skytree on Tuesday evening, local authorities confirmed. The fire was reported around 5 p.m. at a two-story house in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, and quickly spread to at least eight buildings, including nearby houses.

Witnesses described the fire spreading rapidly due to strong winds in the densely packed area. “The smoke was severe, so I stayed in my home,” said Yoshinori Ito, a 60-year-old business owner living nearby.

Firefighters responded promptly, but the fire left two individuals dead. The incident occurred approximately 600 meters from Oshiage Station, close to the Tokyo Skytree, one of the city’s most popular tourist landmarks. Investigations into the cause of the blaze are ongoing.
