Senate Confirms Pete Hegseth as Defense Secretary Despite Controversy

The U.S. Senate confirmed Pete Hegseth as the nation’s new defense secretary in a late-night vote on Friday, despite concerns about his qualifications and behavior. Hegseth, a former Fox News host and Army National Guard veteran, faced criticism over allegations of heavy drinking and aggressive behavior toward women.

Despite these concerns, the Republican-led Senate pushed through the confirmation. Vice President JD Vance cast a tie-breaking vote, which is unusual for Cabinet nominees. Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised Hegseth for his military experience, saying he would bring a “warrior’s perspective” to the Pentagon.

Hegseth’s confirmation reflects President Trump’s influence over the GOP-led Senate, as well as the ongoing focus on culture wars in the government. Next week, senators will consider other controversial Trump nominees for top positions.
