Trump Takes Action to Restrict Abortion Access, Both in the U.S. and Abroad
Former President Donald Trump made moves to limit abortion access, both in the United States and internationally, on Friday. Speaking to anti-abortion activists in Washington, Trump promised to protect the progress made by the anti-abortion movement. He reversed two executive orders by President Joe Biden that had protected abortion access. These orders had allowed access to abortion pills and the ability for women to travel to states where abortion is legal. Trump also signed an order that cuts U.S. funding for foreign organizations that provide or support abortion services. He reinstated the “Mexico City Policy,” also known as the “global gag rule,” which stops U.S. aid from funding abortion-related services or advocacy in foreign countries. This policy has been a part of U.S. law since 1984 and has been reversed by Democratic presidents and reinstated by Republican ones.
