President Paudel Highlights Unity and Prosperity during Sonam Lhosar Celebrations
President Ramchandra Paudel has expressed his belief that festivals like Sonam Lhosar play a vital role in strengthening national unity in Nepal. In his message of best wishes for the festival, which is celebrated by the Tamang community, Paudel emphasized that such occasions foster mutual goodwill, tolerance, and a sense of fraternity among the country’s diverse ethnic, linguistic, and cultural groups. “Festivals like Sonam Lhosar help further consolidate the unity among all Nepalis, encouraging everyone to work towards building a prosperous, economically and socially strong nation,” President Paudel stated in his message. In addition to the Tamang community, other groups such as the Hyolmo, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangwa, Bhote, Dura, and Lepcha also celebrate Sonam Lhosar, each with their own unique customs and traditions. The widespread observance of this festival across different communities further highlights its importance in promoting unity and cultural exchange within Nepal.
Sonam Lhosar, celebrated on the first day of the bright fortnight in the month of Magh, marks the Tamang New Year according to the lunar calendar. On this day, members of the Tamang community worship their clan deity, perform nature worship, and reflect on the teachings of Buddha.
