US officials confirmed Thursday that there were likely no survivors after a passenger jet carrying 64 people collided with a military helicopter and crashed into the icy Potomac River near Washington, D.C.

Washington Fire Chief John Donnelly announced that the operation had shifted from rescue to recovery. As of Thursday morning, 28 bodies had been recovered, including one from the helicopter. Emergency teams, operating in freezing conditions with heavy winds and ice, continued their search overnight.

The crash occurred on a clear night with good visibility, and both aircraft were reportedly following standard flight patterns. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
