Prime Minister’s Attention Drawn to the Demand for Not Remaining Neutral in the Israel-Palestine War
Representatives from different parties and civil society organizations, including senior vice-president and former deputy prime minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Centre), met with Prime Minister Oli at his official residence in Baluwatar on Wednesday. They urged the Nepalese government to take a stand at international forums against Israel’s continuous and forceful attacks on Palestine and Lebanon, as informed by his secretariat. The memorandum called for a change in Nepal’s policy of neutrality in foreign affairs and for Nepal to clearly express its position at international platforms like the United Nations in support of the oppressed. In response, Prime Minister Oli emphasized that Nepal would remain in favor of world peace, human rights, and justice. He stated that neutrality does not mean siding with the powerful and leaving the weak to suffer and assured that the government would not deviate from the issues raised in the memorandum. During the meeting, leaders from the Maoist Centre, National People’s Front, CPN (Unified Socialist), Revolutionary Communist Party, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal, and Progressive Transformation Movement, including General Secretary Dev Prasad Gurung, leader Durga Paudel, Secretary Sher Bahadur Kunwar, senior leader CP Gajurel, Foreign Department head Arjun Thapa, and activist Shyam Shrestha, were present.Various political parties and civil society organizations have submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, urging him to take a stance against Israel’s attacks on Palestine.
The memorandum also demanded that the government take action to bring back Nepali nationals, including Vipin Joshi, who are under Hamas control in Palestine, and the thousands of Nepali youths in Israel, to ensure their safety during the war.
“We are in favor of world peace. We will not fight against any power, nor will we be part of any military alliance, but we will not sit idle in the face of injustice,” Prime Minister Oli said. “We will stand for justice, peace, and the protection of human rights.”
