A 17-year-old Afghan girl who has fought against the oppressive restrictions on girls in her country has been awarded the prestigious International Children’s Peace Prize. Nila Ibrahimi received the honor on Tuesday for her courageous efforts to stand up for girls’ rights in Afghanistan under the Taliban’s restrictive rule.

Ibrahimi, who is prohibited from speaking publicly in her own country, gained international attention before the Taliban’s takeover for her activism, especially her campaign to lift a ban on schoolgirls singing in public in Kabul. Her advocacy work, aimed at challenging the severe limitations placed on women and girls in Afghanistan, has made her a symbol of resistance and a beacon of hope for many.

She joins a list of previous awardees, including climate activist Greta Thunberg and education advocate Malala Yousafzai, as a powerful voice for change.
