Trump Administration Lowers USAID Staff, Thousands to be Let Go

The Trump administration has taken bold steps to reduce the number of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). On Monday, most of the USAID workers worldwide were notified that they were out of work, and over 1,600 domestic workers were notified that they would lose their jobs. The plan is under an effort led by President Trump and business supporter Elon Musk to cut down on government agencies and reduce spending.

A recent court ruling allowed the government to proceed with its proposal, which includes phasing out nearly 2,000 positions at USAID. Despite protests from staffers and labor unions, the administration maintains the move is necessary to end waste and reduce programs it considers promote a liberal agenda. USAID already has closed its Washington, D.C., headquarters and suspended the majority of aid programs globally.

While the reforms will affect both staff in the U.S. and abroad, USAID officials have given assurance that overseas workers who remain on the job will be helped. The agency is also trying to secure transportation for those who wish to return home.
