A deadly bus crash in south Bolivia on Saturday resulted in the deaths of at least 37 people, including eight children. The accident occurred on a mountain road towards Uyuni in the Potosi department. Six foreigners, five of whom were Peruvian and one a three-year-old German child, were among the victims. Forty-one others were injured and hospitalized.

The crash happened when a bus transporting individuals to the city of Oruro to witness a grand festival veered into the other lane and crashed into another bus. One of the drivers was speeding and drunk, the police said.

Bolivia’s mountain highways are notorious for being hazardous, with around 1,400 people killed in road crashes on average annually. This is the country’s fatal bus crash for 2024, besides a series of deadly crashes in recent months.
