The Kremlin said that U.S. President Donald Trump’s foreign policy is in sync with Russia’s vision. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described Trump as being “common sense” and further said that if the two leaders maintain their political will, relations between the U.S. and Russia could improve rapidly.

Trump, who calls himself a fan of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been working to restore relations with Moscow since he took office. This includes aligning himself with Russia on two UN votes and standing up for Putin in a recent standoff with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also praised Trump for his position, terming him a pragmatist who intended to bring peace in Ukraine. Lavrov lashed out against the European states for prolonging the war and noted that the desire for peace among the new US administration heralds a U-turn by the previous administration under Joe Biden.

While tensions remain between the U.S. and Russia, the Kremlin believes there is space for a more cooperative relationship under Trump’s leadership.
