Mark Carney Vows to Stand Tall Against Trump throughout Canada’s Trade War
Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has said that he will not succumb to US President Donald Trump’s trade war. In his victory speech when he won the Liberal Party leadership, Carney said that Canada will “never” be part of the United States and is ready to fight for its way of life. Carney, formerly the head of the Bank of England and Bank of Canada, blamed Trump of acting in an unacceptable way and warned that America was trying to take over Canada’s territory and resources. He promised that the nation would be protected from the Americans, citing that Canada is ready to fulfill this role, as it would do in hockey. Carney, 59, was elected 85.9% to replace the Liberal Party leader, besting Chrystia Freeland, a senior government minister to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Carney will replace Trudeau, but Canada must conduct elections by October and there are reports an election might be sooner. The trade war with the US has been a delicate matter, and Carney has been the best leader to be entrusted with its management. There are recent surveys that show Canadians feel more than other politicians can rely on him when it comes to negotiating with Trump. However, critics of Carney argue that his lack of experience with contesting seats will be challenging for him in the next election. Despite this, the anti-Trump voice of Carney is resonating with Canadians as they worry about the impact on their economy.
