Israel Launches First Wave-Powered Electricity Plant at Jaffa Port

CGC News Reporter December 17, 2024

Israel has inaugurated its first power plant that generates electricity from sea waves, marking a significant step toward renewable energy production. Located at Jaffa Port in Tel Aviv-Yafo, the plant, developed by Eco Wave Power in partnership with EDF and the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality, has a capacity of 100 kilowatts.

The facility consists of 10 buoys installed along the breakwater, each connected to an energy conversion unit that harnesses the movement of waves to generate electricity. The energy produced is fed into Israel’s national grid, with all output purchased by the Israel Electric Corporation. This project is seen as a major advancement in Israel’s efforts to increase renewable energy production, reduce pollution, and improve energy security.
