Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces, and his assistant were killed in an explosion early Tuesday in Moscow. The blast, caused by a device hidden in a scooter, occurred as Kirillov was leaving a residential building. Photos from the scene show extensive damage to the building, with broken windows and scorch marks visible. The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case and launched an investigation into the deaths. Kirillov had been placed under UK sanctions for his alleged role in the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine.
