France Deploys Aid to Mayotte Following Devastating Storm, Fearing Heavy Casualties

CGC News Reporter December 17, 2024

France is rushing emergency aid to its overseas territory of Mayotte after the island was devastated by Cyclone Chido, which struck over the weekend with winds reaching 220 kph (136 mph).

Authorities fear the death toll could rise into the hundreds or even thousands, though only 14 deaths had been confirmed as of Monday. Mayotte, already struggling with poverty, suffered extensive damage, particularly in its slums, where metal shacks were flattened. The cyclone also destroyed vital infrastructure, including the airport and hospital. France has dispatched rescue teams, military personnel, and supplies, with more reinforcements expected in the coming days. Mayotte’s precarious living conditions, including a large number of undocumented migrants, have made it difficult to assess the full extent of the disaster.
