The European Union will grant Turkey an additional 1 billion euros ($1.05 billion) in funding to support the care of Syrian refugees currently residing in the country, European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen announced on Tuesday.

At a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, Von der Leyen confirmed that the funds would be allocated for the healthcare, education, and other essential needs of refugees. Additionally, the money would help improve migration and border management, including facilitating the voluntary return of Syrian refugees.

“This additional one billion euros for 2024 is on its way,” Von der Leyen said, emphasizing the EU’s ongoing commitment to addressing the challenges posed by the refugee crisis in Turkey, which hosts one of the largest populations of Syrian refugees in the world.

Turkey has been a key partner for the EU in managing the refugee crisis, and the new funding is part of a broader effort to provide humanitarian aid and ensure better living conditions for displaced Syrians while supporting Turkey’s border management efforts.
